DIY root touch up

Every once in a while, even the best of us get in a pinch…. our roots are looking bad and we can’t afford to pay a professional, can’t get in with our usual stylist, etc. etc. Some of us just do our own color anyways.

Here’s a scenario that I see too often, and it makes me sad:(

Bright, shiny roots. Slightly darker and lusterless mid-strand. Dry and dead looking ends. This is a classic sign of an at home color-er. The most common at home coloring mistake I see is that when it comes time to do the roots, the box color gets applied haphazardly all over the hair, doing un-needed damage and screwing up the consistency of the color. Yuck!!

On that note, I made a DIY root touch up video. Here are two things to consider when touching up your roots.

  • When going lighter, only apply color to roots, no need to pull color through the mid strand or ends.
  • When going darker, apply color to roots, and then at the last 10 minutes of the process, comb through hair with a medium tooth comb to pull the color down the hair shaft a bit to blend. If the ends need a little freshening up, spray a bit of water through the hair before combing through, that will help bring the color down the shaft further when combing.
